Dear Member

The safety and welfare of our members remains the first priority of our Board of Directors. We have been monitoring the development of the respiratory Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and the disease it causes, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), from a variety of domestic and foreign sources. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified COVID-19 as a pandemic and President Trump declared it a National Emergency.

Early information from China, where COVID-19 first started, Germany, Italy, and South Korea shows that some people are at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness. They include:

  • Older (60 years of age and over)
  • People who have serious chronic medical conditions like
    • Heart disease
    • Diabetes
    • Lung disease
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems or immune deficiencies.

Since this vulnerable population represents a very large number of Germania Verein members, on Saturday, March 14, 2020, our board voted to:

“Suspend all of our meetings and events from March 15 through May 31. That would include membership meetings, practices, Sunday Shootings, etc. This would NOT include Ludwig’s German Table. The Board Meetings will be held electronically during this time.

No additional Germania Verein meetings or events will be authorized or scheduled during this period. Our Officers and Directors will continue their responsibilities in managing the affairs of the Germania Verein, including periodic visits to the club. Custodial and maintenance activities will continue as needed. We will be communicating with you electronically, providing relevant updates as they occur.

This will be a difficult and stressful time but our Germania Verein has faced many challenging times in our 165 year history, emerging stronger and wiser from the experience. The pioneers who founded us, and their succussors, dealt with earthquakes, fire, disease, and war. They were made of stern stuff, and so are we. Attached please find some suggestions on how to both minimize your risk of exposure to the Coronavirus and successfully navigating this pandemic.

I look forward to celebrating our successful negotiation of this current crisis with you at our Annual Picnic at Vasona Lake County Park on Sunday, June 7, 2020.

Carl Schmidt
President

Things members can do to lessen their exposure to the Coronavirus and better prepare themselves for successfully navigating this pandemic:
  • Have supplies on hand
    • Contact your healthcare provider to ask about obtaining extra necessary medications to have on hand in case there is an outbreak of COVID-19 in your community and you need to stay home for a prolonged period of time.
    • If you cannot get extra medications, consider using mail-order for medications.
    • Be sure you have over-the-counter medicines and medical supplies (tissues, etc) to treat fever and other symptoms. Most people will be able to recover from COVID-19 at home.
    • Have enough household items and groceries on hand so that you will be prepared to stay at home for a period of time.
  • Take everyday precautions
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
    • Take everyday preventative actions
      • Clean your hands often
      • Wash your hands often with soup and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, or having been in a public place.
      • If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
      • To the extent possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public places—elevator buttons, door handles, handrails, handshaking with people, etc. Use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your hand and finger if you must touch something.
      • Wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places.
      • Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, etc.
      • Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs: practice routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces (e.g. tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, sinks, and cell phones)
      • Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. Your risk of exposure to respiratory viruses like COVID-19 may increase in crowded, closed-in settings with little air circulation if there are people in the crowd who are sick.
      • Avoid all non-essential travel including plane trips, public transportation, and especially avoid embarking on cruise ships.
